Setting the Scene
The UMass Minutemen look to bounce back from last series as they travel to Boston, Massachusetts, to take on the Northeastern Huskies at the Friedman Diamond. The game is set to take place at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8.
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2022 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 139th season. Twenty-seven members of the team are back from the 2021 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including five freshman and three transfers.
Recap in a Minute
UMass dropped the ball on their last game of the Georgetown series, falling 8-7.
The Minutemen went down early 5-0 by the third inning, before the Minutemen finally got on the board in the third when Drew DeMartino hit a double to center, bringing home Kevin Skagerlind and Nolan Tichy to score two.
In the fourth, Tichy recorded his first collegiate home run with a deep shot to right field bringing Mike Gervasi home, as well, helping UMass inch closer to tying the game, 5-4.
Georgetown scored three more to make the score 8-4, until Cole Hebble hit a three-run bomb in hopes of keeping the game alive to bring it to a one score game, but it was not enough.
All-Time vs. Northeastern
The Huskies have the lead in the all-time series 50-45 against the Minutemen, including their 5-0 sweep last season. The first meeting between the two teams dates back to 1922. The last time the Minutemen defeated the Huskies was in 2017 in the Beanpot consolation game. Massachusetts won, 6-5, with Casey Aubin picking up the win with three strikeouts.
It's Going, Going, and it's Gone
The Minutemen have tallied five homeruns in the first three games, from four Minutemen. Steve Luttazi leads the team with two followed by Mike Gervasi, Hebble, and Tichy with one each. Luttazi had a stellar first game with two homeruns including a grand slam, and Gervasi was the only homerun in the team's second meeting with Georgetown.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2022 season marks the 56th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fifth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
On Deck
UMass will hit the road again, heading to the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, to take on Penn State in a three-game series on Friday, March 11 through Sunday, March 13. Friday's first pitch is slated for 2 p.m., while Saturday's match will begin at 2 p.m., followed by Sunday's game starting at 11 a.m.
