March 05, 2022 | Women's Basketball

Breen recorded a season-high 28 points, while Taylor tallied 20 of her own in the Semifinals Round.

WILMINGTON, Del. – Graduate student Sam Breen totaled a season-high 28 points, while junior Sydney Taylor added 20 points to help the No. 3-seeded University of Massachusetts basketball advanced to the Atlantic 10 Finals after defeating No. 7-seeded Saint Joseph's University, 76-58, at the CHASE Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

UMass improved to 25-6 overall on the season, while Saint Joseph's finished with an 13-17 record on the year. Massachusetts will play in its second consecutive A-10 Championship game, and third in program history.

Breen was 13-of-19 (.684) from the field, including 2-for-4 (.500) from behind the three-point arc, while Taylor went 8-for-14 (.571) and 3-for-7 (.428) from beyond the arc. Makennah White registered 10 points on the day, shooting an 83.3 field goal percentage (5-of-6). Breen grabbed a team best nine rebounds and had a game-high four steals, tying her career best. Destiney Philoxy led the way in assists with a game-high five, as Breen and Angelique Ngalakulondi recorded two blocks apiece.

Massachusetts outrebounded Saint Joseph's, 36-26, and outscored the Hawks in points in the paint, 44-32 and in points off turnovers, 13-8. UMass shot 55.2 percent from the field, making 32 of its 58 attempts.

Breen got the Minutewomen on the board first with a layup, before SJU responded with a layup of their own to tie the game up at 2-2. With the score at 4-3, in favor of the Hawks, UMass began an 18-4 run that elapsed for eight minutes and 10 seconds, where Breen tallied 16 points alone, to add to her 18-point first quarter. In the final two seconds of the first, Saint Joseph's Katie Mayock got sent to the free throw line, hitting both shots to close out the quarter, 21-10.

The second quarter opened with a three-pointer from the Hawks, before they added three more points to bring them back within five at 21-16. Massachusetts extended its lead with back-to-back layups from White and Philoxy, but SJU's Talya Brugler put up a good layup to make it a 25-18 contest. A layup from Breen, a triple from Ber'Nyah Mayo and another layup by Ngalakulondi helped the Minutewomen to five more points, as Saint Joseph's grabbed three more, pushing UMass ahead 32-21 to end the half.

The third quarter saw Massachusetts continue to pull away from Saint Joseph's as the Minutewomen totaled 18 points, while the Hawks recorded 15 in the quarter. Taylor contributed nine of the 18 points for UMass, as Breen earned six and Mayo notched three. IN the final frame, Taylor collected 11 more points on the afternoon, hitting four of her five attempts from the field, including two of her three from behind the arc, and adding one shot from the charity stripe. White tallied eight points, also going 4-for-5 from the field. UMass registered 26 points to Saint Joseph's 22 in the fourth, bringing the contest to its final total, 76-58.

UMass will match up with No. 1-seeded Dayton on Sunday, March 6, in the A-10 Finals at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN2 at the CHASE Fieldhouse.
