Setting the Scene
The University of Massachusetts baseball team makes a trip to Albany, New York, to take on the University of Albany on Wednesday, March 30, at Varsity Field at 1 p.m.

The Minutemen improved to 8-7-1 on the season after taking two-of-three in the weekend series with Towson. The Great Danes hold an 11-9 record overall and are coming off a 12-10 loss to NJIT in the series finale on Saturday, marking the fourth straight loss for Albany.

Recap in a Minute
UMass took game two and three of the three-game series at Towson last Saturday and Sunday, after the Tigers picked up the win in game one. The Minutemen edged the Tigers 4-3 on Saturday, before capping off the weekend with a 5-4 victory on Sunday.

In game two, Kevin Dow completed five innings on the mound, with a career best eight strikeouts, while allowing three runs on six hits and walking three. Six Minutemen tallied a hit on the day, including Drew DeMartino with his third home run of the year and both Chris Pearsons and Nolan Tichy with doubles. Kevin Skagerlind led Massachusetts with two RBIs, while DeMartino and Michael Rounds contributed one RBI each.

During a close game three, DeMartino went 2-for-4 on the day that included a two-run, two-out double, adding an RBI single on the day, as well, to lead the team with a season-high three RBIs. Aidan Wilde contributed a multi-hit performance, as the senior hit a double of his own. Skagerlind and Steve Luttazi registered RBI singles each in the ninth inning for UMass. Jack Pawloski received the win, as he struck out two and walked one in 2.1 innings of work.

All-Time vs. Albany
The Minutemen and Great Danes will meet for the eighth time in program history as UMass holds a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams first met during the 1920 season, before meeting again on April 2, 2011, where Massachusetts won, 4-2. The last meeting between UMass and Albany was on March 26, 2019, as the Great Danes came away with a 7-6 victory.

Massachusetts last defeated Albany on March 27, 2018, on the road, 8-7.

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2022 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 139th season. Twenty-seven members of the team are back from the 2021 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including five freshman and three transfers.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2022 season marks the 56th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fifth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

On Deck
Massachusetts opens Atlantic 10 play when it hosts Saint Joseph's for a three-game series Friday, April 1 through Sunday, April 3. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m., while Saturday's contest will begin at 1 p.m. The series finale on Sunday will start at 12 p.m.
