Late Rally Not Enough In Baseball’s 7-5 Loss To UAlbany
March 30, 2022 | Baseball
A four-run eighth saw the tying run on second with the go-ahead run on first, but the Minutemen fell short.
Cole Hebble and Jacob Sloss led UMass with two hits apiece, as six other Minutemen contributed a hit on the day. Hebble, Kevin Skagerlind, Nolan Tichy and Sloss each had one RBI, which included Skagerlind's RBI double. Will MacLean recorded two runs, followed by Drew DeMartino, Sloss and Carter Hanson with one run scored.
Massachusetts and UAlbany entered the second inning scoreless, before the Great Danes put up four runs in the bottom of the frame. On an RBI triple, UAlbany added one more to its tally, making it a 5-0 contest in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fourth, MacLean led off with a walk, before stealing second with one out. Tichy hit a single through to right field, advancing MacLean to home to get the Minutemen on the board. UAlbany earned a run back to lead 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth, as a runner came across the plate on a ground out.
Nothing got going for either team in the fifth or sixth, but in the bottom of the seventh the Great Danes extended their lead, 7-1.
Massachusetts got something going in the eighth frame, as DeMartino led off with a single to left field. MacLean followed up with a single of his own to put him and DeMartino on first and second, respectively. After two consecutive outs, Sloss singled up the middle, bringing in DeMartino to score and pushing MacLean into scoring position. On a balk, MacLean got sent home, making it a 7-3 contest, in favor of UAlbany. Hanson walked during his at bat, before Hebble hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Sloss from second. UMass picked up its fifth tally of the day thanks to Hanson scoring on Skagerlind's RBI double, but the Minutemen were unable to score more in the inning.
The Great Danes were held off from scoring in the bottom of the inning, but UMass could not complete its rally in the top of the ninth, bringing the game to its final score of 7-5.
Max LeBlanc (0-1) took the loss for Massachusetts, after allowing four runs, one hit, two walks and striking out one in 1.1 innings of work. Thomas Quinn received the win for UAlbany, giving up one run on two hits, walking two and getting two strike outs.
