Three-Run Sixth Puts Baseball Past Towson, 4-3

March 26, 2022 | Baseball

Dow finishes with career-high eight strikeouts, while DeMartino records solo home run.

TOWSON, Md. – A three-run sixth inning aided the University of Massachusetts baseball team past Towson University, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Schuerholz Park. Senior Kevin Dow completed his time on the mound with a career best eight strikeouts, while graduate student Drew DeMartino registered his third long ball of the season with a solo shot to right center.

Six Minutemen tallied a hit on the day, including DeMartino with a home run and both Chris Pearsons and Nolan Tichy with doubles. Kevin Skagerlind led the team with two RBIs, while DeMartino and Michael Rounds contributed one RBI each. DeMartino, Will MacLean, Aidan Wilde and Steve Luttazi, scored the runs for UMass.

Late in the bottom of the first, Towson struck first with a single RBI. After a scoreless second and third inning, DeMartino sailed the ball out in right center for a solo home run to knot the game up at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.

At the bottom of the fourth frame, the Tigers took back a run to regain the lead at 2-1. Towson grabbed another run in the fifth after a walk forced in the runner at third.

The Minutemen tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth frame to take their first lead of the contest. Rounds stepped up to bat late with the bases loaded for Massachusetts, as he reached first on a base on balls, sending MacLean home. Skagerlind hit a two-out single to left field that brought Wilde and Luttazi across the plate to give UMass the go-ahead run, before Rounds was called out at third to end the half inning.

UMass' defense held off Towson for the remainder of the game to secure the 4-3 victory and tie the series, 1-1, with the Tigers.

Dow (3-1) earned the triumph for the Minutemen, allowing three runs on six hits and walking three to go along with his career-high eight strikeouts in five innings of work. Tyler Dalton stepped on the mound for UMass, pitching four frames, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out four. Nick Janowicz received the loss for Towson after going 5.2 innings, allowing two hits, four runs, seven walks and getting two strikeouts.

Massachusetts and Towson will compete in the series finale on Sunday, March 27, at 12 p.m., at Schuerholz Park, as the Minutemen look to clinch the series.
