Setting the Scene
The University of Massachusetts baseball team travels to Towson, Maryland, to take on the Towson University Tigers for a three-game weekend series. First pitch is set for Friday, March 25, at 2 p.m., with game two being played on Saturday, March 26, at 1 p.m. The series finale will take place on Sunday, March 27, at 12 p.m., at Schuerholz Park.
The Minutemen are 6-6-1 on the season and are coming off a loss in their home opener. The Tigers enter the series 7-14 overall, falling, 15-3, last at Virginia on Tuesday, March 22.
Recap in a Minute
UMass dropped its home opener, 17-6, to Holy Cross at Earl Lorden Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Collin Shapiro recorded a double bringing around a team-leading two runs, before reaching home with an unearned run on an error. Aidan Wilde and Kevin Skagerlind followed with one RBI each, as Cole Hebble tallied a team best two hits, with Shapiro, Wilde, Skaegerlind, Dylan Judd and Drew DeMartino all totaling one each. Shapiro, Skagerlind, Judd, Wilde and Cole all had a registered a double.
All-Time vs. Towson
The Minutemen and Tigers will meet for the fifth time on Friday afternoon with the series tied at 2-2. UMass and Towson met for the first-time last season for four games. Towson took the first two contests, winning 8-7 and 4-0, before Massachusetts picked up a 3-1 and a 10-1 victory in games three and four.
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2022 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 139th season. Twenty-seven members of the team are back from the 2021 campaign, while eight players join for their first season in Amherst, including five freshman and three transfers.
It's Going, Going, and It's Gone
The Minutemen have tallied 13 homeruns in 13 games, from eight Minutemen. Steve Luttazi leads the team with three followed by Hebble, DeMartino, and Wilde tallying two each. Nolan Tichy, Judd, Mike Gervasi and Will MacLean also have one home run apiece. Luttazi had a stellar first game with two homeruns including a grand slam, before earning one in game three at Fairleigh Dickinson.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2022 season marks the 56th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fifth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
