Massachusetts Baseball Powers Past UMBC, 10-5

Five Minutemen contribute multi-hit performances, highlighted by three-hits from Wilde.

BALTIMORE – University of Massachusetts baseball collected its second straight win with a 10-5 victory over UMBC at Alumni Field on Wednesday afternoon. Five Minutemen had multi-hits on the day, including a 3-for-4 clip for senior Aidan Wilde, including a triple, while sophomore Kevin Skagerlind, junior Mike Gervasi, freshman Will MacLean and graduate student Cole Hebble all contributed two hits apiece.
 
Along with Wilde, Gervasi added a triple of his own on the afternoon. Skagerlind had four RBIs, and Gervasi followed with two. Wilde, MacLean and Collin Shapiro registered on RBI each, as Shapiro and Nolan Tichy each recorded a hit. Wilde, MacLean and Hebble all came across home plate twice, while MacLean earned his first collegiate hit of his career in the second.
 
After a scoreless first inning, the Minutemen got the bats going in the second, posting seven runs. UMass saw Tichy, Wilde, Hebble, Shapiro, Skagerlind and Drew DeMartino touch home early in the frame, headlined by Gervasi's two-run RBI triple. Late in the bottom of the inning, UMBC brought in one runner.
 
UMass kept the momentum going in the third, as they tallied three more runs. Three Minutemen were walked, putting Wilde into scoring position, before a double from Skagerlind allowed Wilde, MacLean and Hebble to score. At the bottom of the third frame, UMBC was able to add a run to make it a 10-2 contest.
 
The Retrievers went on to have three-run fifth inning, but Massachusetts was able to hold UMBC off in the final four frames to conclude the contest at 10-5.
 
Scott LeSieur (1-0) came away with the win for the Minutemen, after striking out three, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk in three innings of work. Matt Aronson started on the mound for UMass, pitching four innings, giving up two runs, three hits, four walks and striking out two, while Max LeBlanc relieved LeSieur, going two full frames, allowing one hit and recording two strikeouts. Reid Celata of UMBC took the loss after throwing 1.2 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits and only striking out two.
 
Massachusetts will be back in action on Wednesday, March 16, taking on UMBC in Baltimore, Maryland, at 3 p.m.
