Women’s Track & Field Captures Gold In Three Events On Day Two Of New England Championships

The Minutewomen finished second in the team scoring out of 22 schools.
BOSTON – University of Massachusetts women's track and field collected six medals on day two of the New England Championships, including golds in 60m, shot put and triple jump at the Reggie Lewis Track & Field Center. The Minutewomen finished second out of 22 schools in the team scoring with 127.5 points while, Quinnipiac took the title with a score of 134.
Grace Poku took home the 60 meter title, setting a new UMass record with her winning performance of 7.59 seconds. Caroline Schissel placed fourth, clocking in at 7.89 seconds.
Danielle Notarfrancesco was victorious in shot put with her toss of 46 feet, 2.75 inches and Kira Kopec provided points for the Minutewomen, taking fifth with a mark of 41 feet, 6 inches.
UMass' third individual champion of the day, Emily McDonald won triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 8 inches. Sarah Yocum captured silver in 60 meter hurdles at 8.64 seconds and Colette O'Leary earned bronze in 1,000 meter run, crossing the finish in 2 minutes, 55.69 seconds.
The Minutewomen's 4x400 meter relay earned Bronze, as well, as Kopec, Daniella Pierre, Sadai Headley-Mawasi and Lillian Kirry combined for a time of 3 minutes, 52.92 seconds.
Poku and Yocum also scored in the 200 meter dash, taking sixth (25.90) and seventh (25.91), respectively. Samantha Schwers placed fourth in the 800 meter run with her time of 2 minutes, 17.31 seconds and Grace Phair was fifth in the Mile, running 5 minutes, 6.77 seconds.
To round out UMass' individual scorers on the day, Elizabeth Hoenes captured sixth in 400 meter dash (59.52) and Sarah Witt was sixth in 500 meter dash (1:19.17).
The 4x800 meter relay team of Eugenia Fairhurst, Jaden Young, Hannah Beckman and Alexsandra Bettencourt claimed fourth in 9 minutes, 32.22 seconds.
UMass will split its squad next weekend, sending individuals to the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University on Friday, February 11, and others to the Giegengack Invitational at Yale on Saturday, February 12.
