Kopec And Robinson Win Gold For Women's Track & Field On Day One Of New Englands

Both individuals also set new top-five all-time marks in the UMass record book in their respective events.

BOSTON – University of Massachusetts women's track & field collected four medals and sent six on to Saturday's finals on the track on the opening day of the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on Friday. Through seven scored events, the Minutewomen sit second in the team standings with 43.50 points in the field of 17 squads.
 
Kira Kopec dominated the competition, winning four of the five pentathlon events en route to gold with career-best score of 3773 to improve her No. 2 all-time mark in the UMass record book. She posted a winning time of 9.07 seconds in 60 meter hurdles for 895 points and ran 2 minutes ,18.47 seconds to first in 800m for 844 points. Kopec threw 43 feet, 8 inches to claim the top spot in shot put (748 points) and leapt 18 feet, 1.75 inches to first in long jump (709 points).
 
Lily Robinson won gold in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17 minutes, 23.52 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in UMass history.
 
The Minutewomen's distance medley relay squad of Eugenia Fairhurst, Daniella Pierre, Jaden Young and Grace Phair clocked in at 12 minutes, 8.79 seconds to take home the silver.
 
In high jump, Madelyn Krohto claimed the bronze position, clearing 5 feet, 3 inches and Courtney Rowland provided points with her seventh-place showing as she posted a mark of 5 feet, 3 inches, as well.
 
Jordan Lafave was sixth in long jump with her mark of 17 feet, 11 inches and Danielle Notarfrancesco placed seventh in weight throw with a toss of 50 feet, 10.25 inches.
 
Samantha Schwers qualified for the 800 meter final, clocking in at 2 minutes, 16.29 seconds in Friday's prelims. Colette O'Leary advanced out of the 1,000 meter run prelims, with a second-place time of 2 minutes, 59.33 seconds.
 
Elizabeth Hoenes moved on to the 400 meter dash final, taking fifth in prelims at 59.26 seconds, while Sarah Witt was fifth in the 500 meter dash prelims to qualify for the final with her time of 1 minute, 19.41 seconds.
 
Sarah Yocum and Grace Poku advanced to Saturday's 200 meter dash final, running 25.92 seconds and 25.98 seconds to seventh and eighth, respectively.
 
Action will resume on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center.
