February 26, 2022 | Women's Basketball

Taylor led the way with a game-high 28 points, as Ngalakulondi and White record double-doubles.

ST. LOUIS – Four Minutewomen reached double figures as the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team topped Saint Louis University, 74-62, on Saturday night at the Chaifetz Arena. Junior Sydney Taylor led the way with 28 points, followed by sophomore Ber'Nyah Mayo with 15, while junior Angelique Ngalakulondi (12 pts, 11 rebs) and sophomore Makennah White (11 pts, 10 rebs) came away with double-doubles.

UMass improved to 23-6 overall on the season and 11-4 in the Atlantic 10 conference, while Saint Louis fell to 9-17 overall and 5-9 in the league.

Taylor was 8-for-16 (.500) from the field, including 4-for-10 (.400) from beyond the three-point arc. She also went 8-for-11 (.727) from the charity stripe, tallying a new career-high of free throws made. Mayo shot a 75.0 field goal percentage, making six of her eight attempts, and was perfect from behind the arc, knocking down all three of her shots. Ngalakulondi collected her fourth double-double of the season and the fifth of her career, and led UMass in rebounds, as fellow teammate White registered her first of the season and second of her career. Destiney Philoxy totaled a team best nine assists, earning her 500th career assist and more. White was also first in steals with two, tying her career high.

Massachusetts outrebounded Saint Louis, 42-34, and outscored the Billikens in points off turnovers, 12-8, and fast break points, 6-2. The Minutewomen shot a 44.4 three-point field goal percentage (eight-of-18) and hit 12-of-17 (.706) free throws on the night.

UMass controlled the pace of the game early, thanks to Mayo's triple at the 9:42 mark of the first quarter. The sophomore scored back-to-back baskets, as she made a layup off a fast break pull the Minutewomen ahead 5-0. Ngalakulondi kept Massachusetts run going with a layup of her own to make it a 7-0 contest. Two buckets for the Billikens allowed them to close the gap to three, but Taylor, Mayo and Breen added to UMass' total with back-to-back-to-back three-pointers to make it 16-6. Massachusetts and Saint Louis traded a few points, before the Billikens went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter at 18-16, in favor of UMass.

The Minutewomen began the second frame with a 4-0 run to increase their lead to 25-16, before going on a 4-1 run to extend the lead to 32-21. The two teams grabbed five more points apiece in the second with UMass still holding on to a 37-25 lead at the end of the first half.

In the third quarter, Ngalakulondi scored eight points for the Minutewomen, while Taylor tallied six of her own, to combine for 14 of the team's 19 points. UMass maintained its lead throughout the quarter, despite 17 points from Saint Louis. The third closed with a score of 56-43.

The fourth quarter saw nine more points from Taylor and seven from White for 16 of the Massachusetts' 18 points. The Billikens edged out the Minutewomen in points in the quarter, notching 19, but it was not enough, giving UMass its 23rd triumph of the season with a final tally of 74-62.

UMass readies for the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships on Wednesday, March 2-Sunday, March 6. Seedings will be determined late Saturday night, along with game day, times and opponents for the Minutewomen.
