Early Second Half Run Keys 72-62 George Mason Win Over UMass

Rich Kelly and Javohn Garcia each finished with 13 points while Garcia added six rebounds and five assists.

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team fell to George Mason 72-62 on Sunday afternoon in the Mullins Center. The Patriots (11-7 Overall, 4-1 Atlantic 10) used 20-5 early second half scoring run to take control after the Minutemen (9-11 Overall, 2-6 A-10) cut a 10-point halftime deficit down to five.
 
UMass answered a George Mason 7-0 to start the game with a scoring run of its own, an 8-0 stretch jumpstarted by consecutive triples from Trent Buttrick and C.J. Kelly. The Minutemen took a four-point lead at 19-15 with 11:45 left in the first half on a Rich Kelly triple. Rich Kelly started the day 2-of-2 from range and finished 3-of-5 from deep with a tied for team-high 13 points.
 
Javohn Garcia tied it back up at 25-25 with 4:57 left in the half before the Patriots closed out the first half on a 12-to-2 run and knocked down three 3-pointers during the span. D'Shawn Schwartz started the George Mason run with one of his two made 3-pointers on the day and finished with a game-high 15 points.
 
Garcia finished tied for the team lead in scoring with 13 points to mark the fourth consecutive game that the guard has finished in double figures. The sophomore guard hauled in five first half rebounds for a UMass squad that held a 20-15 rebound advantage at the break on his way to finishing with a new career-high six boards to go along with a season-high five assists.
 
The Minutemen rattled off a quick five-point run to open the second half to bring the score to 37-32 before the Patriots went on to outscore UMass 20-to-5 over the next 5:23 of game time to build a 57-37 advantage.
 
UMass made a late push in the final five minutes, using a quick 7-0 run capped off by a Buttrick 3-pointer to bring the score to 68-53 heading into the final media timeout. Buttrick finished with 10 points on 60-percent shooting and added six rebounds, three assists and two blocks. The Minutemen answered four straight Patriot points with a 9-0 scoring run to end the afternoon.
 
Greg Jones added nine points on 3-of-6 from the field to go along with five rebounds in his return to the starting lineup. UMass and George Mason finished the day deadlocked on the glass at 37 rebounds each while the Minutemen finished with a 13-to-6 advantage on the offensive glass.
 
The Minutemen resume action on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Rhode Island at 2 p.m.
