Weeks’ Career-High 30 Points Helps Lift UMass Over URI, 78-67

T.J. Weeks scored 22 of his career-high 30 points in the second half.
KINGSTON, R.I. – T.J. Weeks poured in 22 points in the second half on his way to finishing with a career-high 30 as the UMass men's basketball team defeated Rhode Island 78-67 on Saturday afternoon at the Ryan Center. C.J. Kelly finished with a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to finish just three assists away from a triple-double.
The Minutemen (10-11 Overall, 3-6 Atlantic 10) committed just four turnovers in the second half after committing 12 before the halftime break while forcing Rhode Island (12-9 Overall, 3-6 A-10) into 20 turnovers on the afternoon. UMass finished the game with 13 steals led by a career-high five by Weeks and four by C.J. Kelly. The Minutemen shot nearly 49-percent from the field over the final 20 minutes and finished the game at 45-percent shooting.
Weeks got going early and often heading out of the halftime break as he knocked down three straight triples and added a dunk on his way to scoring 15 of his 30 points in the opening eight minutes and change of the second half. Weeks finished the day 12-of-17 from the field and 6-of-9 from deep to post the first 30-point game by a UMass player since December of 2020.
UMass used an 11-0 run over 4:14 down the stretch to build a 71-56 lead with 4:47 remaining. The Minutemen took their largest lead of the night at 16 points with just over three minutes to go and finished the half 9-of-13 from the stripe to close out the win.
The game began with the Minutemen making 4-of-5, including four straight, as part of an early 8-0 run. The Rams answered with an 8-0 run of their own to pull ahead 22-14 and force a UMass timeout before the Minutemen bounced back with a 16-2 scoring run of 6:20 of game time. The defense held Rhode Island without a point for over five minutes and without a made field goal for 6:24 during the run.
Noah Fernandes added 11 points and seven assists while Rich Kelly also finished in double figures with 14 points. Trent Buttrick and Weeks each pitched in six boards as the Minutemen and Rams both finished with 38 rebounds on the day.
The Minutemen return home to the Mullins Center for a pair of games next week beginning on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against George Washington.
