Women's Basketball Falters Against Rhode Island, 60-46

Mayo and White reach double figure points.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball fell to University of Rhode Island, 60-46, at the Mullins Center on Wednesday night.   
 
UMass moves to 15-5 on the season and 3-3 in the Atlantic 10 conference, while Rhode Island improves to 16-3 overall and 6-0 in A-10 play.
 
Ber'Nyah Mayo led the Minutewomen with 14 points and Makennah White followed close behind with 12 of her own, as the duo reached 10-plus points for the 13th and fifth time, respectively, this season. Sam Breen and Mayo both recorded a team-high six rebounds on the night, with Breen also totaling a team best two blocks. Mayo also added five assists, while her and Angelique Ngalakulondi registered two steals apiece.
 
The Minutewomen edged out the Rams in points in the paint, 30-28, and bench points, 12-4. The two teams were even in fast break points with four. UMass shot its lowest field goal percentage on the year with 32.8 percent (19-of-58) but was 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.
 
Rhode Island was quick to score three points to get on the board first, but Mayo answered back with a triple of her own to knot the game up, 3-3, at the 8:42 mark in the first quarter. A layup by URI began the team's lead at 5-3, before another made layup pushed the Rams to a four-point lead. The Rams went on an 8-2 run, lifting them to a 17-11 lead, while White made a jumper that closed Massachusetts' gap to six at the final second of the quarter.
 
With the score at 17-11, in favor of Rhode Island, URI found ways to keep extending its lead. As the Rams led by seven, with a score of 25-18 at 4:04 in the second, UMass went on a 4-0 run to bring the Minutewomen back within three. A 6-0 run for Rhode Island helped keep the team ahead at 31-22. Mayo drove to the basket with one second left on the clock, collecting her seventh point of the night, to bring the game to a 31-24 score at the half.
 
A 9-4 run for the Rams opened the third quarter, pushing them ahead, 40-28. Back-to-back layups from Breen and White helped the Minutewomen to cut the deficit to eight, before Rhode Island made a 10-3 run, pulling ahead 50-35.
 
In the fourth quarter, URI continued its run, making it an 18-3 total, that brought the Rams to its largest lead of 23-points over UMass. Mayo ended the scoring drought in the fourth for the Minutewomen with a layup at the 3:45 mark to begin a 9-0 run, but Rhode Island sealed the deal with two more points scored. White added one more basket for UMass, bringing the contest to its final score of 60-46.
 
 
Massachusetts will hit the road for a Saturday match up at Saint Joseph's at 2 p.m., in Philadelphia, Pa. The contest will be aired on ESPN+.
