Trio Of Minutewomen Lead Women's Basketball To 74-48 Victory At Saint Joseph's

Breen, Taylor and Philoxy reach double figures, as Breen records 13th double-double of the season.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sam Breen, Sydney Taylor and Destiney Philoxy each tallied 10-plus points to aid the University of Massachusetts women's basketball to a 74-48 win over Saint Joseph's University on Saturday afternoon at the Hagan Arena.
 
UMass improves to 16-5 on the year, including 4-3 in the Atlantic 10 conference, while Saint Joseph's falls to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the league.
 
Breen led the way with 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to collect her 13th double-double of the season and 36th of her career. Taylor notched 17 points of her own with Philoxy following with 13. Philoxy dished out a game-high eight assists and was perfect from the field, making all four of her attempts, including all three from behind the arc, while also hitting both of her shots from the free throw line. Breen and Ber'Nyah Mayo came away with three steals, as Breen added one block on the afternoon.
 
Massachusetts shot 70.0 percent from the charity stripe, making seven-of-10. The Minutewomen also outrebounded the Hawks, 46-26.
 
Saint Joseph's got on the board first in the first quarter and was ahead 6-2 at the 8:03 mark on back-to-back three-pointers. UMass went on an 8-0 run that elapsed one minute and 48 second, to lead 10-6. With a close 12-11 game, in favor of the Minutewomen, Taylor made a trip to the charity stripe, before making a layup at 4:34 of the quarte rto extend the lead by five. SJU closed the gap to three, but Taylor hit her first three of the day, bringing the score to 19-13. UMass earned six more points to the Hawk three, holding on to the lead heading into the second.
 
With a 25-16 lead, Mayo opened the second quarter with a pull-up jumper to add two more to UMass' lead. Massachusetts later went on a 7-0 run to push ahead, 34-20. At 2:54 of the quarter, Philoxy drained a three to expand the lead, 39-25, before hitting another triple, back-to-back, at 1:16 to pull the Minutewomen up to a 42-27 lead.
 
In the third quarter, Philoxy and Breen made consecutive layups to extend games score to 46-31, in UMass' favor. Two made free throws and a three-pointer by the Hawks helped them get back within 10, but Philoxy knocked down her third three of the day that began a 15-0 run for the Minutewomen that elapsed five minutes and nine seconds to close out the third with a 61-36 lead.
 
UMass kept its lead throughout the final frame, scoring 13 more points to SJU's 12, to end the contest at 74-48.
 
UMass travels to Hanover, N.H. for a non-conference matchup at Dartmouth on February 1, at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
