Minutemen Strike Twice In First Half, Win 2-1 At BU

September 03, 2021 | Men's Soccer

Alec Hughes opened the scoring in the 31st-minute with his first goal of the season.

BOSTON, Mass. The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team found the back of the net twice in the first half as they went on to defeat Boston University 2-1 on Friday evening at Nickerson Field. The Minutemen (2-0-1 Overall) produced eight shots with four on goal and seven corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.

Alec Hughes struck first for the Minutemen in the 31st-minute with his first goal of his sophomore season to put UMass ahead 1-0. Hughes received a through ball from Yosuke Hanya after Hanya bested a BU defender and found space to make the pass to Hughes, who slipped the shot in under the goalkeeper's legs for the goal.

Hanya found himself involved in the second goal after beating the BU defense before playing a dribble around the BU goalkeeper who was forced to foul and surrender the penalty kick to the Minutemen in the 45th-minute.

Joe Leslie stepped up to the spot and hammered home his third goal of the season into the left side of net after sending the keeper to the right. The goal marked the third for Leslie in the last two halves of play up until that point dating back to the second half of the Sacred Heart contest on Monday.

BU fired off 11 of their 16 shot attempts on the night in the final 45 minutes while putting four shots on target. The Terriers found their lone goal of the night in the 58th-minute on a Ronaldo Marshall header following a cross into the box from Eitan Rosen.

Marvyn Dorchin finished with five saves in goal for the Minutemen, including multiple key saves down the stretch as BU pushed for the equalizer. Dorchin came up big in the 71st-minute, dropping down to his left to deny a driven shot headed for the near post of Dorchin.

The Minutemen put 50-percent of their shots for the night on target, led by two on target shots from Hughes and Leslie.

UMass returns home to Rudd Field for its next four matches, beginning with Central Connecticut State on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
