Begliardi Ghidini’s Golden Goal Sends UMass Past CCSU In Double Overtime

Filippo Begliardi Ghidini scored twice in the win, including the golden goal in the 102nd-minute.
AMHERST, Mass. – Filippo Begliardi Ghidini scored his second goal of the night in the 102nd-minute of play to send the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Central Connecticut State in double overtime on Wednesday at Rudd Field. The Minutemen (3-0-1 Overall) outshot the Blue Devils 19-6 on the game and had five corner kick attempts to CCSU's zero.
Begliardi Ghidini scored his first goal of the season in the 18th-minute to give UMass a 1-0 lead after Alec Hughes beat a CCSU defender to the ball and evaded another to play the ball across goal to Begliardi Ghidini, who slid the ball into goal with his left foot.
Central Connecticut State answered back quickly with the equalizer in the 20th-minute on a goal from Austin Rocke off an assist by Rida Kori. The Blue Devils were limited to just two shots on target for the afternoon with UMass keeper Marvyn Dorchin stopping a ranged shot from Kori in the final moments of regulation.
The Minutemen nearly regained the lead heading into the halftime break after Yosuke Hanya earned a penalty kick in the 44th-minute to set up a chance from the spot for Joe Leslie, who shot one with pace off the lower part of the crossbar to keep the match tied at 1-1.
Both teams went without a shot in the first overtime period with the first coming by Begliardi Ghidini in the 102nd-minute for the game-winning goal. Hanya made a run from midfield to set up the goal, sending a pass to Begliardi Ghidini's right foot just inside the 18-yard box for a strike into the top left side of goal to give the Minutemen a 2-1 win.
Home non-conference play rolls on for the Minutemen with game two of a four game homestand on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Vermont as part of UMass Athletics Hall of Fame/men's soccer alumni weekend.
