Minutewomen Play To 1-1 Draw With Rhode Island

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak to nine matches with a 1-1 draw against Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutewomen (6-2-3 Overall, 2-0-1 A-10) matched their nine-match unbeaten streak from 2018 in the draw.
The Minutewomen got off to a fast start as Karina Groff scored in just the third-minute to put UMass up 1-0. Mia Carazza made a run down the right side and played a cross ahead to Groff down the middle, who slipped a shot around the URI keeper for the goal. The goal marked the third of the season for the freshman Groff.
Lauren Smida nearly game UMass its second goal of the game in the 22nd-minute as she fielded a low cross off the corner from Carazza and sent a right-footed strike on target that was saved away by URI's Faith Hutchins.
UMass attempted five of its 13 shots in the first half, putting four on target to finish with six shots on goal for the afternoon. Rhode Island attempted 14 shots on the game, including five of their own in the first half with three on target. The Rams tied things up at 1-1 in the 25th-minute on a goal by Rebecca D'Anna in what proved to be the final goal for either squad.
The Minutewomen produced just two shot attempts in the second half and first period of overtime before putting two of six shots on goal in the second overtime period. Ashley Lamond put a shot on goal in the 107th-minute while Chandler Pedolzky found the target in the 110th-minute on her second shot of the game. UMass' defense held the Rams without a shot in the second overtime period.
UMass continues Atlantic 10 play on Thursday with a 3 p.m. kickoff at George Washington.
