Minutemen Draw With Northeastern In Season Opener

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in the season opener against Northeastern on Thursday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutemen answered back quickly to tie the game at 1-1 after surrendering a penalty in the 49th-minute.

Timothy Ennin converted on the Northeastern penalty to put the visitors ahead by a goal in the early moments of the second half.

The Minutemen responded with the equalizer less than 20 seconds later as Ben Shepherd found the back of the net off an assist from Filippo Begliardi Ghidini in the 50th-minute. Shepherd finished with a tied for team-high in shots with three while Joe Leslie attempted three off the bench for the Minuteman attack.

UMass found themselves on the front foot for much of the first half, earning eight corners in the opening 45 minutes on their way to finishing with a 17 to five advantage in corner kicks. The Minutemen attempted 12 shots with two on target while Northeastern put three of their 10 shots on frame.

The Minutemen continue play on Monday with their first road match of the season at Sacred Heart at 3 p.m.
