August 30, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Joe Leslie opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 59th-minute and added his second in the 88th.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart 2-0 on Monday evening behind a pair of goals by sophomore forward Joe Leslie at the Park Ave Field. The win helped the Minutemen move to 1-0-1 on the season heading into their next road matchup at Boston University on Friday.
UMass attempted seven of its 13 shots in the first 45 minutes, putting three on target highlighted by scoring chances from Mike Willis and Evan Fournier in the 29th-minute as both found frame with shot attempts that were saved by Sacred Heart keeper Kevin Siwik.
The Minutemen broke through in the 59th-minute on Leslie's first goal after UMass drew a penalty to set the ball up on the spot for the sophomore, who sent the goalkeeper diving to his right before chipping the ball into the middle of goal. The goal marked the first collegiate goal for Leslie.
UMass added some cushion to their lead in the final moments of the match as Filippo Begliardi Ghidini found Leslie on his run down the left side. Leslie drew the keeper out and sent a right-footed shot into the right side of goal to put the Minutemen ahead 2-0.
The Minutemen remain on the road with Friday's match at BU at 7 p.m. and will return home on Sept. 8 to host Central Connecticut State at Rudd Field.
