Breen Named to CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team

Breen is the first Minutewoman to garner Academic All-District accolades since 2001
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts senior forward Sam Breen has been named to the 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team, announced by the organization on Thursday. She is the first women's basketball Academic All-District selection at UMass since Kathy Coyner was tabbed to the list in 2001.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot, which will be announced in late May.
Breen, a native of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, is pursuing graduate studies in Learning, Media and Technology and previously completed her undergraduate degree in Sociology. She has two years of competitive eligibility remaining entering 2021-22.
Breen enjoyed a decorated campaign this past season, playing an instrumental role in Massachusetts' run to the WNIT, the program's first national postseason appearance since 1998. An Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team, All-Academic and All-Championship Team pick, Breen started all 24 games, leading the Minutewomen to the A-10 Championship Game for the first time since 1998. She averaged a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds over 37.5 minutes per game, leading the league with 15 double-double performances.
At the conclusion of the WNIT, Breen was placed on the Charlotte All-Region Team. During that three-game stretch, she logged averages of 22 points and 7.7 rebounds, helping the Minutewomen to their first season in program history with multiple postseason victories. Her 25-point effort against Charlotte on March 20 tied a postseason program record, then two days later Breen reset the mark with 27 against Ohio in the Consolation Final.
UMass is housed in CoSIDA's District 1, which includes all NCAA Division I schools in New England as well as New York. Each Academic All-District team around the country is voted on by sports information directors in that respective region who hold active CoSIDA membership.
