The 2021 Minutemen
UMass finished its 2021 regular season with a 7-1-3 overall record to mark the best winning percentage in program history with a mininum 10 games played. The Minutemen started the year with a six-game unbeaten streak before suffering their only setback of the season. The team picked up a pair of wins and two draws in their final four games of the year on the road, including a 3-3 draw at No. 25-ranked Virginia Tech in the regular season finale.
Offensive Attack
The UMass attack ranks 10th-nationally in scoring offense with 2.36 goals per contest while ranking 14th in total goals with 26 in 11 games. Midfielders Yosuke Hanya and Ben Shepherd each dished out seven assists on the year, ranking 6th in the nation in total assists and 11th in assists per game. Freshman attacker Alec Hughes put home seven goals to rank 13th in the country while Filippo Begliardi Ghidini scored six to rank 29th.
Atlantic 10 Accolades
Hughes led the way for a UMass squad that picked up four all-Atlantic 10 honors this year as he was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year and selected to the A-10 First-Team and All-Rookie Team. Hanya and defender Graham Brenner joined Hughes on the first-team while Shepherd was tabbed second-team all-conference.
The Tournament
UMass earned one of 14 at-large bids to secure a spot in the program's fifth ever NCAA Tournament and the first since the 2017 season. The appearance also marks the second time in the last four years that UMass has qualified for the national postseason. The longest tournament run in program history came in 2007 as UMass upset No. 1-seeded Boston College in the second round on its way to winning four games to secure a spot in the College Cup in Cary, N.C.
