Minutemen Fall To #12 Penn State In NCAA Second Round

UMass finished its season with a 7-2-3 overall record.
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team fell to No. 12-ranked Penn State 4-1 in the second round of the 2020 NCAA Men's Soccer Championships on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Minutemen finished the season with a 7-2-3 overall record.
Penn State built a 3-0 lead in the first half, scoring their first goal in the 10th-minute on a ball that was deflected into the net by UMass. The Nittany Lions' Alex Stevenson scored in the 21st-minute to put Penn State ahead by two goals after the Minutemen nearly equalized down at the other end moments before. Seth Kuhn scored a left-footed goal off the post and into the back of the net in the 33rd-minute to go ahead 3-0.
UMass tightened up defensively to start the second half, holding Penn State without a shot attempt until the 75th-minute as the Minuteman offense pushed forward.
Yosuke Hanya helped create an opportunity for the Minutemen in the 53rd-minute, beating his mark down the right sideline before sliding around another defender after a fake shot. Hanya sent a ball across the face of goal that was deflected in by a Penn State defender.
Hanya set up another great scoring change in the 79th-minute as he got by his defender in the midfield and found Ben Shepherd making a run down the left side for a shot that was saved by Penn State's Kris Shakes. Shepherd and Hanya each finished with a pair of shots on goal while Ryan Levay added a pair on target in six shot attempts.
Penn State added its fourth goal in the 82nd-minute on a Tyger Evans goal after a shot bounced off the post and found the foot of Evans in front of net.
UMass put seven of its 14 shots on target in the contest while Penn State found the target on four of its nine shots.
