April 11, 2021 | Women's Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. – A 77th minute goal from Jenny Hipp proved to be the difference as the Massachusetts women's soccer team (6-4-1, 5-2-1) earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Fordham on Sunday at Rudd Field.
With the victory, Massachusetts secures a spot in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals, where it will take on Davidson at 5 p.m. on Thursday in Saint Louis. The match will be aired on ESPN+.
Prior to the match, UMass honored its eight seniors: Fatou Barry, Alyssa Chase, Jenny Hipp, Dani Sclafani, Nissa Pereira, Kelly Marra, Mollie Williams and Megan White for their dedication to the Massachusetts women's soccer program.
The Minutewomen defense was the story yet again, helping goalkeepers Alyssa Chase and Bella Mendoza (one save) to its sixth clean sheet of the season and third in the last five games.
Massachusetts controlled the pace of the match for much of the afternoon, outshooting the Rams 15-8 (7-1 shots on goal).
After playing to a scoreless opening half, UMass broke through in the 77th minute when Lauren Smida fed Hipp with a pass at the top of the box, setting up a left-footed strike into the top left corner over the reach of Fordham goalkeeper Maria O'Sullivan (six saves) for the score.
