Minutemen take two over America East preseason favorite
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts baseball picked up a pair of road victories at Stony Brook on Sunday at Joe Nathan Field, taking down the Seawolves in a 9-4 doubleheader opener and capping the day with a 3-1 victory in a darkness-shortened, five-inning tilt.
The Minutemen play next on Tues., March 9, traveling to Central Connecticut for a 2 p.m. game.
Game 1 (Box Score)
Massachusetts 9, Stony Brook 4 (7 innings)
Seven Minutemen combined for 10 hits and the squad used a four-run first inning to never look back.
It was a clutch display of two-out hitting in the first frame, as Stony Brook starter Jared Milch retired the first two batters of the game. From there Dylan Judd went opposite field for a single, Aidan Wilde used an infield squibber to reach base and Michael Rounds worked a walk to load the bases. Mike Gervasi was then hit by the first pitch he saw to give UMass a 1-0 lead, and Chris Pearsons followed up with a bases-clearing double down the left field line to move the score to 4-0.
After Stony Brook got two back in its half of the second, UMass countered with two more runs in the fourth inning. Collin Shapiro came home on a passed ball, then Eddy Hart scored thanks to a Gervasi single. Shapiro would score again on an error in the next frame.
The Minutemen tallied two more insurance runs in the seventh, coming on a Judd double to the gap in left center plating Hart and Kevin Skagerlind.
Pearsons' double gave him a career-high three RBI for the game, and both Gervasi and Judd added a pair apiece. Three Minutemen had two hits each in Hart, Judd and Gervasi.
On the mound, Ben Shields (1-0) earned the victory in 4.2 innings of work, allowing just one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Tucker Wittman contributed one-third of an inning, and Tyler Dalton made his collegiate debut taking the squad through the final two innings. Dalton worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, a sequence that included Dalton's first collegiate strikeout.
Game 2 (Box Score)
Massachusetts 3, Stony Brook 1 (5 innings)
Jack Steele (1-0) logged four strikeouts in a 3.2-inning start and Jack Pawloski earned his first collegiate save as the darkness cut this one short. Steve Luttazi had his second career multi-hit game, including a fourth-inning RBI single that scored Jack Whorf with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Massachusetts once again wasted no time getting on the board, using a Wilde sacrifice fly to bring in Shapiro in the top of the first. This time though, Stony Brook leveled the score at one-all in its half of the first, jumping on an errant pickoff attempt.
The score remained until Luttazi's knock in the fourth, and Wilde smacked a 3-1 pitch to right center in the fifth inning to bring in Hart with an insurance run putting the game away.
