Saint Joseph’s Holds Off Massachusetts, 1-0
March 31, 2021 | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – The Massachusetts women's soccer team (5-3-1, 4-1-1) outshot Saint Joseph's 13-2 in the match, but a Hawks goal in the 62nd minute proved to be the difference as SJU nipped the Minutewomen on a rainy Wednesday night on Sweeney Field, 1-0.
UMass carried the play for most of the night, and heavily pressured Saint Joseph's down the stretch in search of the tying goal, but couldn't sneak one past SJU goalkeeper Katie Cappelletti (two saves).
Bella Mendoza got the start in goal for Massachusetts for the second straight match before giving way to Alyssa Chase in the second half.
After playing to a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Saint Joseph's struck first in the 62nd minute when Izzy Greene fired a shot from 30 yards out that found its way past Chase and into the top left corner. The goal was the first strike against the Minutewomen in more than 316 minutes over a four-match span.
UMass wouldn't go away quietly, though, earning four corner opportunities in the final 23 minutes of play in search of the equalizer, and nearly got it late when Nissa Pereira got the ball along the left side, but her shot went just wide.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Saturday when UMass hosts La Salle at 6 p.m. at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
