UMass Runs Out Of Time Vs. La Salle, 2-1

AMHERST, Mass. – After falling behind by a pair of goals early int eh second half, the Massachusetts women's soccer team (5-4-1, 4-2-1) cut the deficit in half with a goal from Lindsay Wolf in the 64th minute and pressured all the way to the final horn, but could not net the equalizer on Saturday afternoon against La Salle, 2-1.
After playing to a scoreless first half, the Explorers wasted no time in taking the lead out of the break as Amirah Louketis sent a laser from 25 yards out past goalkeeper Alyssa Chase (one save), who replaced starter Bella Mendoza (one save) to start the second half.
La Salle would go up by two just 10 minutes later when Giovanna Castorina headed a 50/50 ball back down the field and on to the foot of Kelli McGroarty, who lifted it over the head of Chase before she could get back in position.
It was all UMass from there, though, and the Minutewomen fought the rest of the way in an effort to get back into the match. Massachusetts made it a one-goal game with 27 minutes to go in regulation when Wolf sent a header off a beautiful entry from Lauren Bonavita on a corner opportunity, sneaking it past Explorer goalkeeper Jordynn Stallard (one save) for the score.
Bonavita had an opportunity to level the match at two with 15 minutes to play when she took a feed from Dani Sclafani and ripped a shot from 20 yards out, but Stallard was there to knock it down, allowing the Explorers to escape with the win.
Massachusetts will be back in action next Sunday when the Minutewomen host Fordham at 3 p.m. from McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
