Ang scores for the Minutewomen in Atlantic 10 Conference opener
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – University of Massachusetts field hockey fell to Lock Haven, 2-1, in double overtime on Thursday afternoon at Charlotte E. Smith Field in the team's first match of Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Minutewomen continue A-10 action on Saturday when the squad wraps up its Pennsylvania weekend at La Salle in a noon contest.
Massachusetts struck first on a penalty corner tally in the fourth minute. Off a direct insert from Amelie Green to Josephine Ang, Ang took two steps toward goal and fired a low shot that deflected off a Lock Haven defender and above the reach of goalkeeper Joaquina Orlandini (nine saves). It was Ang's third tally of the season.
The Bald Eagles equalized moments later, using a ninth-minute corner tally off the stick of Amy Stevens to level the score at one-all.
The Minutewomen controlled play much of the contest but were unable to solve Orlandini the rest of the day. The squad had two particular chances at the game-winner in the first overtime, including a corner in the 62nd minute followed up in the 63rd by a through ball to Ang. The freshman went one-on-one with Orlandini before Ang's shot trickled just right of the cage.
LHU potted the deciding goal in 74th minute from Martina Spengenberg.
Penalty corners were 17-3 in favor of UMass and shots on goal favored the Minutewomen as well, 10-2.
