McTear’s Pair Pushes Massachusetts Over La Salle in OT

March 27, 2021 | Field Hockey

Co-captain provides two goals plus an assist in 3-2 victory at Hank DeVincent Field

PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts field hockey picked up a 3-2 overtime victory over La Salle on Saturday at Hank DeVincent Field. Following the win, the Minutewomen improve to 5-2 on the season and level their Atlantic 10 Conference record at 1-1. La Salle falls to 0-6 and is now 0-3 against league foes.

All three of Massachusetts' goals on the day came via penalty corners. Co-captain Georgie McTear provided a five-point day with UMass' final two tallies, while McTear also assisted on Claire Danahy's first collegiate goal. Danahy's marker put the squad on the board first before La Salle netted two quick ones to take a 2-1 lead before halftime.

McTear's final goal came just 50 seconds into the overtime period, on the heels of Massachusetts' 11th penalty corner of the day. She took a pass off the top of the circle, dribbled toward the right post and fired a low shot that deflected off of a La Salle defender and into the cage.

UMass brought the score even at two-apiece on a McTear rocket in the 47th minute. Josie Rossbach opened the play with the insert, before McTear spun twice toward the penalty spot and fired into the right side of the goal.

In the 20th minute, Rossbach inserted to Danahy on UMass' third corner attempt. The ball came to Danahy, who played catch with McTear ahead of a shot from 10 yards in front. The lead was short-lived, however, as La Salle equalized just 36 seconds later and pulled ahead in the 22nd minute.

For the afternoon, UMass had 13 shots on goal and held the Explorers to just two. La Salle was also limited to two penalty corners.

Massachusetts is scheduled to play next in an A-10 rematch at Lock Haven on Sat., April 3 in a 4 p.m. game.
