Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball hits the road to take on in-state rival Holy Cross on Wednesday, March 24, at the Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field in Worcester, Massachusetts. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
Recap in a Minute
UMass split the four-game series with Towson this past weekend, as the Tigers took the doubleheader Saturday, and the Minutemen earned the two victories on Sunday afternoon. The Maroon and White now move to 6-5 on the season.
On Saturday, Towson jumped to an early 6-0 lead before UMass tallied a run in the fifth when Eddy Hart knocked in Chris Pearsons on a single. After two more runs by the Tigers in the sixth, the Minutemen plated six runs in the ninth frame, all with two outs, but the efforts came up short leading to a Towson 8-7 victory in game one.
In the final contest of the afternoon, Towson scored two in the first inning and added one each in the third and fifth inning to win 4-0 over Massachusetts.
During Sunday's doubleheader, game one saw a 3-1 triumph for UMass. The Maroon and White collected three runs in the second, with a single from Mike Skagerlind that waved two around. On the mound, Zack Given earned his first collegiate victory after striking out three and walking one batter in four-plus innnings. Jack Pawloski picked up his third save of the season upon his entrance and did not allow a hit.
An early 7-0 lead and a combined no-hitter into the sixth inning by both Daniel Livnat and Jared Henry helped UMass win the final game of the series, 10-1. Dylan Judd headed the margin by two-run home runs in the second and fourth innings, and an RBI double at the top of the sixth. Towson got one back in the bottom of the sixth, but the Minutemen scored three more in the final frame brought the game to its final score.
All-Time vs. Holy Cross
UMass leads the all-time series with Holy Cross, 38-33-1, since the start of the rivalry in 1894. The two programs last met on March 19, 2019, in Worcester. The Crusaders defeated the Minutemen, 11-2, on the day.
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2021 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 138th season of competition. Twenty-two members of the team are back from the abbreviated 2020 campaign, while thirteen players are in their first season in Amherst, including seven freshmen and six transfers. A complete roster is available here.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2021 season marks the 55th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Fourth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
On Deck
Massachusetts will travel to Boston, Massachusetts, for a doubleheader against Northeastern on Saturday, March 27. Time will be determined at a later date.
Due to the ever-evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, game dates, times and opponents are subject to change. The best way to remain on top of schedule updates is via the official UMass baseball schedule page, as well as the team's social media accounts (@UMassBaseball).
