Bonavita’s Goal Lifts UMass Over Fordham In 2OT, 2-1
March 21, 2021 | Women's Soccer
BRONX, N.Y. – Trailing 1-0 with 35 minutes left to play, Nissa Pereira knotted the game at one in the 55th minute before Lauren Bonavita sent a header into the back of the net in double overtime to send the Massachusetts women's soccer team (3-2-1, 2-0-1) past Fordham (0-2-1, 0-2-0) on Sunday afternoon.
The victory moves UMass' unbeaten streak in league play to three games and marks the first double overtime win for the Minutewomen since 2015.
The game-winning strike came with 3:45 to play in the second overtime when Grace Pinkus sent a cross into the box to Bonavita, who redirected a header past Fordham goalkeeper Maria O'Sullivan (two saves) for her first of the season.
Fordham outshot UMass in the match 10-8, with Massachusetts holding a slight 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Alyssa Chase made one save in goal in the first half before Bella Mendoza came on in relief in the second half and extra time (one save).
The Rams took 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when the hosts were awarded a penalty kick, allowing Maura Holst to beat Chase for the early lead.
The match remained that way until the 55th minute when Pereira inserted a corner into play that found its way into the net to level the game at one a side, forcing extra time.
UMass will return home to host Saint Joseph's at 4 p.m. at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
