Minutewomen Find A Way Again; Top SJU To Move to 3-0-1 in A-10
March 25, 2021 | Women's Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. – Led by the play of goalkeepers Alyssa Chase and Bella Mendoza, as well as the solid defensive presence of the Massachusetts back line, the women's soccer team (4-2-1, 3-0-1) got a goal from Jenny Hipp in the 82nd minute to top Saint Joseph's, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at McGuirk Alumni Stadium.
The win moves UMass to 3-0-1 in conference play this season and extends the Minutewomen's unbeaten streak to four matches.
Chase (one save), Mendoza (two saves) and the UMass defensive corps combined to record its fourth clean sheet of the season and third in the last four games. The Minutewomen have only allowed one goal in league play this season.
After the teams played an even first half adjusting to the warm temperatures at field level, the Minutewomen took control of the match in the second half outshooting the Hawks 4-2. UMass was patient throughout the match, and waited until the final 10 minutes of regulation to strike.
With Massachusetts preparing for a throw in on the right side of the pitch, Hannah Peric was able to knock a header over to the far left post. There Hipp was waiting, eluding a defender and beating goalkeeper Katie Cappalletti (four saves) for the score.
UMass outshot Saint Joseph's 11-8 on the afternoon (6-3 shots on goal) and generated five corner opportunities to just two for the Hawks.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Sunday when UMass travels to Rhode Island for a 1 p.m. match.
