Wilde clubs grand slam as game one rally effort comes up just short

TOWSON, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball was defeated by Towson in both games of the teams' doubleheader on Saturday, with the Tigers taking an 8-7 twinbill opener before defeating the Minutemen by a 4-0 score in the nightcap.

The teams will conclude the weekend with a pair of seven-inning tilts on Sunday, with game one beginning at noon.

Game 1
Towson 8, Massachusetts 7
The Minutemen plated six runs in the ninth inning, all with two outs, but Mike Gervasi could not get past second base with the tying run as the furious rally came up short. Kevin Skagerlind drew a bases-loaded walk to move the score to 8-2 in favor of Towson, then an Aidan Wilde grand slam brought the squad within two runs on one swing of the bat.

Three batters later and following a Towson pitching change, Jack Whorf popped a single into center field, scoring Jake Given and putting Gervasi at second with the tying run. Nolan Tichy stepped to the plate and sent a fly ball to center, but Towson's Javon Fields was in position to make the catch and bring the ballgame to an end.

Towson plated the first six runs of the contest, with the Minutemen getting on the board via a fifth-inning Eddy Hart single scoring Chris Pearsons.

Jack Steele (2-1) received the start for the Minutemen, working five innings in which Steele struck out six despite allowing six runs on nine hits. For Towson Josh Seils was the winner on the hill and Austin Weber came in for a one-out save in the ninth.

Game 2
Towson 4, Massachusetts 0
The Tigers scored twice in the first inning and added one apiece in the third and fifth to take the final contest of the day.

Massachusetts was held to just three hits with Gervasi, Hart and Wilde each tallying singles. On the mound, Max LeBlanc (0-1) and Tucker Wittman combined for nine strikeouts but on the basepaths the squad was able to get just one runner past second base.
