Minutemen Take Two from Towson Sunday Afternoon
March 21, 2021 | Baseball
Massachusetts outscored the Tigers by a combined 13-2 score and allowed only seven hits
TOWSON, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball responded on a high note taking both games of its seven-inning doubleheader at Towson on Sunday, knocking off the Tigers by 3-1 score to start the day and taking a 10-1 triumph to close the weekend with a series split. In total the Minutemen combined for 17 hits in the pair of contests, complemented by just seven hits allowed from the pitching staff on the day.
The Minutemen play next in a 5 p.m. tilt at in-state foe Holy Cross on Wed., March 24.
Game 1
Massachusetts 3, Towson 1
Kevin Skagerlind had a two-out, two-run single in the second inning that proved to be the difference in a pitchers' duel. It capped a three-run frame as a Steve Luttazi single earlier in the inning put the Minutemen on the board scoring Nolan Tichy.
Towson would pull back within two at 3-1 in its half of the second, using an RBI groundout from Jacob Terao.
The southpaw duo of Zack Given and Jack Pawloski carried the Minutemen on the mound. Given picked up his first collegiate victory following four-plus innings in the start, in which Given fanned three and walked one batter. Pawloski pitched the rest of the way, picking up his third save of the season and not allowing a hit.
Game 2
Massachusetts 10, Towson 1
Daniel Livnat and Jared Henry carried a combined no-hitter into the sixth inning all while the Minutemen jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The margin was spearheaded by two-run home runs off the bat of Dylan Judd in the second and fourth innings, plus an RBI double for Judd in the top of the sixth.
Livnat (1-0) worked five innings in his start, during which Livnat struck out three, did not surrender a hit and allowed just two walks and a hit batsman. Henry relieved Livnat for two-thirds of an inning and Matt Aronson brought the squad home for the final 1.1 innings with just three total hits allowed.
With UMass ahead 5-0 after Judd's two-bagger that scored Mike Gervasi, Judd later came home thanks to a Mike Rounds single. Rounds would give the Minutemen another insurance run when he scored on a passed ball.
Towson got one back in its half of the sixth, but the visitors had plenty of breathing room and added two runs in the seventh. Rounds' sac fly carried Aidan Wilde 90 feet home and a base hit for Steve Luttazi drove in Gervasi and Judd to bring the game to its 10-1 final score.
Six of UMass' 10 hits were of the extra-base flavor, including Judd's double and both homers, and doubles for both Gervasi and Nolan Tichy.
