Massachusetts Takes OT Thriller to Reach A-10 Quarterfinals

March 11, 2021 | Women's Basketball

Minutewomen knock off Saint Joseph’s 79-69 and face Fordham Friday at 5 p.m.

RICHMOND, Va. – No. 7 seed University of Massachusetts women's basketball needed overtime but the Minutewomen earned a 79-69 overtime triumph vs. 10th-seeded Saint Joseph's in the Air Force Reserve Atlantic 10 Second Round on Thursday night. The win propels the squad into the Quarterfinals vs. No. 2 Fordham on Friday at 5 p.m. from the Siegel Center.

Four Minutewomen finished in double figures led by a game-high 21 points from Sydney Taylor, along with Destiney Philoxy (17), Ber'Nyah Mayo (13) and Sam Breen (12). Breen pulled down 13 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. Philoxy dished out seven assists, including three to Mayo. Mayo had six dimes on her own to go with four steals, and Breen logged three blocks. The contest also witnessed the collegiate debut of freshman early enrollee Stefanie Kulesza, who saw five minutes as a reserve.
Massachusetts (12-6) found itself on the verge of victory as the final seconds ticked down in regulation. Philoxy drained a pair of free throws with 8.1 seconds remaining to give the squad a 69-66 lead, but on the next Hawks possession Katie Jekot connected on a 40-foot prayer to level things at 69-all and force OT.

Philoxy was crucial throughout overtime as the junior co-captain drew two charges directly leading to points. St. Joe's came within one point on a Katie Mayock trey with 2:38 left and UMass answered with a dominant 9-0 run to seal the outcome.
The Maroon and White faced a 30-24 deficit at the break ahead of a back-and-forth second half with the teams trading runs. St. Joe's swelled its lead to eight at the 7:46 mark of the third quarter, countered by a 14-4 Massachusetts run capped by a Breen three-pointer at the 5:09 mark. From that point into overtime the score remained within two possessions on either side.
