Massachusetts Drops 3-1 Game At New Hampshire

February 26, 2021 | Field Hockey

McTear scores team’s first goal of the season in the loss

DURHAM, N.H. - University of Massachusetts field hockey held an early advantage before New Hampshire rallied and took a 3-1 game from the Minutewomen at Memorial Field on Friday. The game marked the first of the season for both sides and was the first for Massachusetts since the 2019 Atlantic 10 Tournament 475 days ago.

Senior midfielder and co-captain Georgie McTear provided the team with its first goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Jess Beech and graduate student midfielder Amelie Green assisted McTear.

Six Minutewomen made their first appearances as a member of the program during the game, including Green and freshmen Izzy Acquaviva, Josephine Ang, Genevieve Becker, Brooke Richards and Katie Samaranayake.

Richards started in net and made four saves, including one on a penalty stroke. Sophomore defender Josie Rossbach made one defensive save as well.

McTear scored less than four minutes into the game on the team's first penalty corner of the season. Green cleanly inserted to Beech at the top of the circle before McTear stepped into a shot that deflected up and into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Richards kept UNH off the scoreboard in the 18th minute when Richards turned aside a UNH penalty stroke. Bloem van den Brekel stepped to the dot for the Wildcats and lofted the stroke attempt toward the top-right corner. Richards lunged to the side and blocked aside the shot to keep Massachusetts in front.

New Hampshire took the lead during the third quarter with three consecutive goals. Ava Mariani, Finn Caron and van den Brekel scored in succession and pushed the Wildcats in front.

UNH led in total shots, 13-7 and on-target attempts, 8-6. The teams tied with two penalty corners apiece.
