Pair Of Second Half Goals Propel UMass To 2-0 Win At Northeastern
February 24, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Ben Shepherd and Filippo Begliardi Ghidini both scored second half goals for the Minutemen.
BROOKLINE, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team put home two second half goals on Wednesday evening to come away with a 2-0 road win over Northeastern in the season opener at Parsons Field. The Minutemen attempted a game-high 14 shots and put six of those on target on their way to a shutout win over the Huskies.
UMass applied pressure early and often offensively before settling in on the defensive end in the opening half. The Minutemen created multiple chances in the first half, including a Logan Brown sliding shot that was saved off a Ben Shepherd free kick from just inside the corner kick spot in the 27th-minute.
Shepherd broke the scoreless tie in the early moments of the second half with his first UMass goal in the 47th-minute, finding the back of the left side of net on a right-footed shot from outside of the box assisted by Quinn Serafino.
Filippo Begliardi Ghidini added his first goal in a UMass uniform in the 71st-minute after the Minutemen drew a penalty kick. Begliardi Ghidini stepped up to the spot and put UMass ahead 2-0 with a shot into the center of goal as the Northeastern goalkeeper dove to his left post. The graduate student attempted a game-high seven shots for the Minutemen and put three on target.
UMass goalkeeper Marvyn Dorchin finished with four saves on the night, including a diving save in the 73rd-minute to deny a goal and preserve the shutout after UMass pulled ahead by two just moments earlier.
The Minutemen remain out on the road this weekend as they head to Burlington, Vt. For a 2 p.m. kick-off at Vermont on Saturday.
