Second Quarter Surge Pushes Women's Basketball Past Vermont, 68-63

Taylor logged 19 points, while Breen and Ngalakulondi each recorded a double-double on the day.
AMHERST, Mass. – A 10-0 second quarter run that continued into the third, helped the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team to a 68-63 victory over the University of Vermont on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center.
UMass improves to 11-2 on the year, marking one of its best starting records through the first 13 games since the 1976-77 season and becoming only the second team to start a season with the record in program history.
Sydney Taylor led the way for the Minutewomen with 19 points on the day. Angelique Ngalakulondi and Sam Breen both finished with double-doubles on the afternoon. Ngalakulondi collected hers econd consecutive and third of the season, while earning the fourth of her career after notching 17 points and 11 rebounds. Breen claimed the 31st double-double of her career and eighth of the season with 12 points and 12 boards. Ber'Nyah Mayo capped off the double figures with 10 points of her own and Destiney Philoxy registered six assists.
Massachusetts outrebounded the Catamounts 45-27, marking the second straight game of 45 boards total for the Minutewomen. UMass also had the advantage over its opponent with 38 points in the paint, 16 points off turnovers, 16 second chance points and 17 fast break points.
Vermont pulled ahead to an early 7-0 lead to start the contest. Taylor closed the gap by four when she knocked down her first triple of the game. The Catamounts answered back with two three-pointers of their own to extend their lead, 13-3. A layup and three from Breen allowed UMass to bring its score up to eight, but UVM found a way to end the quarter, 17-8.
With a 20-10 score in the second quarter, the Minutewomen went on a brief 4-0 run to come back within six. UMass and UVM traded a few points before Massachusetts went on its 10-0 run, making four of its nine attempted field goals and two made free throws by Philoxy. In the second quarter alone, UMass was able to tally 18 points to come back and take a 26-25 lead.
In the third quarter, Massachusetts maintained its lead collecting 25 points in total. At the start of the third, UMass added four more points to its previous run total, bringing it to a 14-0 run. A Vermont triple brought the run to an end, but the Minutewomen started again with a 12-6 run that included a basket from Mayo from behind the arc, to make it a 42-31 game. UMass collected 10 more points to UVM's nine to end the third at 51-43.
At the 5:59 mark of the final frame, a three-pointer by the Catamounts allowed UVM to close in within three. Mayo answered back, draining a triple of her own, pushing UMass ahead, 60-54. Taylor and Breen added four points combined to extend the Minutewomen's total even more. Back-to-back-to-back threes for UVM brought the score to 66-63 in favor of UMass. With only nine seconds left on the clock, Philoxy was sent to the charity stripe where she made both free throws, ending with a final score of 68-63.
UMass will hit the road to match up against Hartford on Wednesday, December 22, at 12 p.m. in West Hartford, Conn.
