Women’s Basketball Breezes By Hartford, 86-40

Five Minutewomen reach double figures in the team’s effort.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Massachusetts breezed by University of Hartford, 86-40, on Wednesday afternoon at the Chase Arena. The 46-point victory marked the first since December 30, 2019, when UMass defeated Southern Connecticut State by 43 points.  
 
UMass improves to 12-2 on the year, marking one of its best starting records through the first 14 games since the 1968-69 season and becoming the first team in program history to have the best start since the enactment of Title IX and the recognition of women's sports by the NCAA.
 
Sydney Taylor led the effort with 18 points, while Ber'Nyah Mayo and Angelique Ngalakulondi followed with 14 points each. Mayo had a team-leading five steals. Sam Breen finished with 12 points and Makennah White tallied 10 points on the day. Destiney Philoxy sat atop the leaderboard in assists with 11, tying her career best. Alexzeya Brooks (three), Damoni Tucker (two) and Natousha Harden (one) all earned their first career points.
 
Massachusetts outrebounded the Hawks 37-29. UMass shot 61.0 percent from the field, making 36 of its 59 attempts, and shot 61.5 percent from the charity stripe, making eight of 13.
 
After trading a pair of points to start the first quarter, the Minutewomen pulled ahead, 9-2. Hartford scored to bring the tally to 9-4 before UMass went on a 6-0 run to make it a 15-4 contest. The Hawks were able to add five more points, while Massachusetts grabbed five points of their own total, thanks to a triple from Breen and a layup from White. UMass closed out the quarter up by 11 points.
 
With a 20-9 score in the second quarter, the Hawks made an early basket, but Massachusetts extended its lead to 24-11. An 18-4 run in the quarter helped the Minutewomen push their lead even more to end the first half, 42-20. Ngalakulondi logged eight of the team's 18 points in the run, and Mayo collected five points, including three from behind the arc.
 
In the third quarter, UMass continued to pull ahead, eventually leading by 37 points with a total of 65-28, heading into the fourth quarter. The Minutewomen's largest lead came at 2:01 mark of the fourth, when they lead by a 47-point margin at 83-36. A three-pointer from Brooks helped seal the deal, bringing the game to its final score of 86-40.
 
UMass continues its road stretch with a trip to Hanover, N.H., on Tuesday, December 28, for a 7 p.m. match up with Dartmouth on ESPN+.
