Six Minutewomen Reach Double Figures In 87-75 Road Victory Over Columbia

Breen and Taylor led the effort with 19 points apiece, while Ngalakulondi registers third career double-double.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts women's basketball team pushed past Columbia University, 87-75, on Saturday afternoon at Levien Gymnasium. Six Minutewomen finished in double figures, led by Sydney Taylor and Sam Breen's 19 points.
 
UMass improves to 10-2 on the year, marking one of its best starting records through the first 12 games since 1976-77 season and becoming the third 10-2 start in program history.
 
In addition to Taylor and Breen, Destiney Philoxy (14), Angelique Ngalakulondi (13), Makennah White (12) and Ber'Nyah Mayo (10) all totaled double digit points. Ngalakulondi led the team in rebounds with a career best 14, recording her third career double-double. Philoxy tallied six assists to reach her 400th career dime. She etched her name in fourth in the all-time career records, surpassing Leah McDerment (368; 2014-18).
 
Massachusetts outrebounded the Lions 45-32. UMass had 42 points in the paint, 19 points off turnovers and 22 second chance points on the day.
 
The Minutewomen pulled ahead to a 5-0 lead to begin the first quarter, which saw a triple from Taylor. UMass continued with a 24-7 run that lasted most of the quarter, to push ahead by 20 points to a score of 29-9. Columbia hit a three-pointer, before White hit a jumper to close out the first, 31-12. Taylor had the hot hand, logging 10 of the team's 31 points.
 
The Lions opened the scoring in the second quarter, going on a 6-2 run, but UMass came back with its own 13-8 run. Ngalakulondi notched six points for Massachusetts, while Breen added five more for the Minutewomen. Breen ended the half at the 00:18 mark draining one from behind the arc to make it a 46-26 contest at the half.
 
In the third quarter, Massachusetts continued to pull ahead, adding 21 points total to bring the quarter to a 63-47 end. Columbia went on a 13-8 run to close the gap to 11 points for a 71-60 contest at the 6:19 mark, but 16 more points for the Minutewomen sealed the deal.
 
UMass will take a break before returning to action at the Mullins Center on Sunday, December 19, tipping off against Vermont at 3:30 p.m.
