UMass Earns Spot In A-10 Championship With 2-0 Win Over Saint Joseph’s
November 05, 2021 | Women's Soccer
Ashley Lamond and Lauren Bonavita scored for the Minutewomen to send them to their first A-10 title game since 2011.
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team earned its first trip to the Atlantic 10 Championship game since 2011 with a 2-0 win over Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at Baujan Field. The No. 4-seeded Minutewomen will take on the winner of No. 2 Dayton and No. 3 Saint Louis in the championship game on Sunday at noon.
Ashley Lamond scored her second goal of the conference tournament in the 21st-minute to open the scoring, following up her own header that was saved by Saint Joseph's Katie Cappelletti following a cross from Olivia Gouldsbury before putting the ball in the back of the net for her seventh of the season.
Lauren Bonavita gave the Minutewomen a 2-0 lead in the 65th-minute off an assist from Bella Recinos. Recinos set up Bonavita for the goal with a pass for Lamond before continuing her run and sending a through ball to her right for Bonavita, who put a right-footed shot into goal.
Megan Olszewski and Bella Mendoza combined for the shutout, with Mendoza coming up with six saves on 14 shots faced in the second half. Mendoza came up with her sixth save with under a minute remaining to preserve the shutout, a jumping save to her right to deny a goal for SJU's Aleksa Peev.
UMass held an 11 to five shot advantage through the first 45 minutes before Saint Joseph's attempted 14 in the second half to give the Hawks a 19 to 14 shot advantage on the afternoon. Lamond and Bonavita each put a team-high two shots on target for a UMass team that put six of 14 on frame.
