Men’s Soccer Comes Up Short At Dayton, 4-2

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team scored two consecutive goals in the second half to take the lead but eventually fell to Dayton 4-2 on Saturday evening at Baujan Field. The Minutemen (7-3-1 Overall, 1-2-0 Atlantic 10) made a late push for the equalizer and attempted four shots in the final five minutes before Dayton scored to go ahead by two.
Dayton went ahead 1-0 in the 35th-minute with a Kingsford Adjei goal before the Minutemen put in two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 advantage.
The Minutemen earned a penalty kick in the 56th-minute after Ben Shepherd sent a free kick into the box that was controlled by Graham Brenner before attempting a cross that was blocked by a Dayton hand.
Filippo Begliardi Ghidini stepped up to the spot and put in his fourth goals in as many games with a right-footed shot sent to the keeper's left and into goal for his seventh of the season.
UMass took the lead in the 66th-minute after James McPherson took control following a failed Dayton clearance, finding Alec Hughes to his left for a shot across the keeper and into the right side of goal.
The Flyers came back with two unanswered goals of their own, first in the 66th-minute off a free kick headed in by Elias Harryson before Dayton scored in the 89th-minute to bring the score to a final, 4-2.
The Minutemen nearly had the equalizer in the final moments of the game before Dayton added their fourth goal as Yosuke Hanya sent a curling shot towards goal that hit the crossbar in the 86th-minute prior to a free kick attempt by Shepherd from about 10-yards out of the 18-yard box that hit the bar with just over three minutes left.
UMass returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 9 for a 1 p.m. matchup against George Washington at Rudd Field.
