Men’s Soccer Comes Up Short At Dayton, 4-2

October 02, 2021 | Men's Soccer

Filippo Begliardi Ghidini and Alec Hughes both scored in the second half for the Minutemen.

DAYTON, Ohio The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team scored two consecutive goals in the second half to take the lead but eventually fell to Dayton 4-2 on Saturday evening at Baujan Field. The Minutemen (7-3-1 Overall, 1-2-0 Atlantic 10) made a late push for the equalizer and attempted four shots in the final five minutes before Dayton scored to go ahead by two.

Dayton went ahead 1-0 in the 35th-minute with a Kingsford Adjei goal before the Minutemen put in two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 advantage.

The Minutemen earned a penalty kick in the 56th-minute after Ben Shepherd sent a free kick into the box that was controlled by Graham Brenner before attempting a cross that was blocked by a Dayton hand.

Filippo Begliardi Ghidini stepped up to the spot and put in his fourth goals in as many games with a right-footed shot sent to the keeper's left and into goal for his seventh of the season.

UMass took the lead in the 66th-minute after James McPherson took control following a failed Dayton clearance, finding Alec Hughes to his left for a shot across the keeper and into the right side of goal.

The Flyers came back with two unanswered goals of their own, first in the 66th-minute off a free kick headed in by Elias Harryson before Dayton scored in the 89th-minute to bring the score to a final, 4-2.

The Minutemen nearly had the equalizer in the final moments of the game before Dayton added their fourth goal as Yosuke Hanya sent a curling shot towards goal that hit the crossbar in the 86th-minute prior to a free kick attempt by Shepherd from about 10-yards out of the 18-yard box that hit the bar with just over three minutes left.

UMass returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 9 for a 1 p.m. matchup against George Washington at Rudd Field.
