Men’s Soccer Scores Twice Late In 3-2 Win At Davidson

Filippo Beglardi Ghidini assisted and scored the game-winning goal in the final moments.
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team scored twice in the final three minutes to come away with a 3-2 win on the road at Davidson on Saturday afternoon. The Minutemen (8-3-2 Overall, 2-2-1 Atlantic 10) took a late 2-1 lead before answering the Wildcats' response in the 86th-minute on Filippo Beglardi Ghidini's team-leading eighth goal.
Davidson (7-6-1 overall, 2-3-1 A-10) took a 1-0 advantage in the 16th-minute on a goal scored by Connor Smith following a cross sent in from the left side by Nicholas Cavallo.
The Minutemen responded in the 32nd-minute by way of an Evan Fournier goal to tie at 1-1. Ryan Levay headed on a cross further into the box for Fournier, who hammered in a left-footed shot into the left side of goal.
Both teams combined for three goals in the final nine minutes of action, first on a goal by Alec Hughes in the 82nd-minute to give UMass a 2-1 lead. Nathaniel Cardoza sent in a cross from the left side in towards the far post to Begliardi Ghidini, who headed it back to Hughes for a shot off the side of his foot and over the Davidson goalkeeper.
Davidson answered back in the 84th-minute on a Henry Howell goal to tie at 2-2.
Begliardi Ghidini scored his fourth game-winning goal of the season in the 86th-minute, connecting with Yosuke Hanya down the right side before making his run towards the near post. Hanya played an elevated through ball for Begliardi Ghidini, who shook his defender with a touch before playing a left-footed shot across the keeper and into goal to bring the score to a final, 3-2.
The Minutemen return home to Rudd Field for a Wednesday afternoon matchup against Rhode Island at 2 p.m.
