AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men's soccer team picked up its second shutout in the last three games and second consecutive at home as the Minutemen played to a 0-0 draw against Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field. The Minutemen (8-3-3 Overall, 2-2-2 Atlantic 10) put six shots on goal while Marvyn Dorchin came up with five saves in goal.
UMass attempted 19 shots on the afternoon after going the first 24 minutes without an attempt before three shots in their offensive sequence ended with a Drew Lovely header that grazed the far post in the 26th-minute. Alec Hughes put four of his game-high six shots on target while Yosuke Hanya added four shot attempts for the Minutemen.
The Rams were awarded a penalty kick midway through the second half following a UMass foul near the edge of the penalty area. Edvin Akselsen stepped up to the spot and sent it over the bar in the 69th-minute as the score remained locked at 0-0.
Dorchin came up big early in the first overtime period, stuffing a shot sent in towards the near post by Isak Oystese on a Rhode Island counterattack in the 91st-minute. The graduate student closed out the second overtime period with another timely save, this time denying Max Kwitchoff in the 110th-minute for his fifth and final save of the day.
The Minutemen had chances of their own in the overtime period, including a break by Hughes past the URI defenders for an opportunity on goal that was turned away by the Rams' Stefan Schmidt. Schmidt finished with six saves on the day.
