Massachusetts records 600th all-time win in program history
PHILADELPHIA – University of Massachusetts women's basketball recorded its fifth straight win and 600th all-time in program history as the Minutewomen defeated La Salle, 78-61, on Sunday at Tom Gola Arena. The squad is now 6-1 on the season, 2-0 in the Atlantic 10, while La Salle drops to 3-5 and 0-2 against conference foes.
Sam Breen recorded her third straight double-double performance, pacing Massachusetts with game-highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds. Maddie Sims contributed 15 points and Ber'Nyah Mayo poured in 13, rounding out the double-figure scorers on a 45.9% shooting day as a team for UMass.
Destiney Philoxy was the offensive catalyst all day, handing out a career-high 10 assists. It is the first 10-assist game in the Atlantic 10 this season and first for a Minutewoman since November 2018.
Trailing by eight midway through the first quarter, Massachusetts answered the early deficit with a 14-5 run to end the period. It was a 5-of-11 shooting effort for the squad in that final 5:32 stretch, helped in part by three La Salle turnovers. Breen keyed the Minutewomen with eight points, followed up by five apiece from Mayo and Sydney Taylor.
The hot-shooting sides cooled down in the second stanza, shooting under 30% in the quarter. After a quiet two minutes around the media timeout, the teams traded buckets before Taylor sank a pair of free throws in the waning seconds, putting UMass ahead 36-34 at halftime. It was a lead the visitors would hold for the remainder of the contest.
Philoxy was limited in the home stretch with four fouls, but returned with 5:27 remaining in regulation. She tied her career-best with her ninth assist on a bounce pass that Mayo finished with 5:16 on the clock, then reset the mark on a feed to Breen in the paint with 2:54 left as Massachusetts closed out the win.
The Maroon and White had the team rebounding advantage (42-32), points in the paint (38-22) and second chance points (13-8).
Massachusetts plays next on Tues., Jan. 5 in a 6 p.m. home game vs. Rhode Island at the Mullins Center.
