THE OPENING TIP: THE MASSACHUSETTS-RHODE ISLAND PREVIEW
• Winners in five straight, University of Massachusetts women's basketball is back at the Mullins Center for a Tues., Jan. 5 game vs. Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island. This game was added to the schedule in a Dec. 30 announcement by the A-10 office.
• The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with UMass alum Adam Frenier '04 (PxP) and Cam Sibert (color) on the call. Nick McGahan will serve as producer and director.
• This is the second of three scheduled meetings between the Minutewomen and Rhode Island this season. UMass took a 79-69 decision at Mullins on Dec. 8, and are also slated to travel to Kingston, R.I. on Sun., Feb. 14.
• UMass is looking for its third straight win over Rhody and is 6-1 against the Rams since the 2017-18 season. The Minutewomen have crossed paths with their Ocean State rival 85 times dating back to 1974, more than any other opponent in the Atlantic 10.
• UMass meets the Rams in a quick turnaround, having defeated La Salle on the road by a 78-61 score on Sun., Jan. 3. Three Minutewomen scored in double figures, led by Sam Breen's double-double (25 pts, 13 reb) that helped Breen earn A-10 Player of the Week honors. Destiney Philoxy was also instrumental in the win with a career-high 10 assists.
• Through Sunday's games, Philoxy ranks No. 2 in the nation in assists per game (8.6) and narrowly trails Fairfield's Rachel Hakes (8.8) for the Division I lead. Breen is second in the conference in scoring (20.4 ppg), a figure that ranks in the top 35 across the DI level.
• Massachusetts also checked in at No. 50 in the NCAA's latest NET ranks, atop the A-10 and behind only UConn (2) and Boston College (47) among teams in New England.
• The week following the Dec. 13 St. John's game included news welcomed across college basketball–a blanket eligibility waiver awarded by the NCAA Division I Council to transfer student-athletes. As a result of the announcement, junior forward Danielle Sanderlin may play immediately.
