Taylor drops 17 points but four-game winning streak ends
ST. LOUIS – University of Massachusetts women's basketball was defeated at Saint Louis on Sunday by a 63-52 score at SLU's Chaifetz Arena. With the result, a four-game winning streak comes to an end for the Minutewomen who are now 10-3 and 6-2 in Atlantic 10 play. The Billikens improve to 3-2 and 1-2 in league games.
Â
Sophomore Sydney Taylor poured in 17 points to lead the Minutewomen in Taylor's third performance of 15-plus in the last four games. Senior Sam Breen (11) pulled down double-digit rebounds for the fourth straight contest and eighth in the last nine. Junior Destiney Philoxy had a game-high six assists and graduate student Maddie Sims came up with four blocks.
Â
It was a slow start for both sides as a defensive battle kept the scoring low into the first quarter media timeout. The teams swapped buckets out of the break before Massachusetts pieced together an 8-2 run and ended the frame ahead 16-11.
Â
Much of UMass' scoring in the second period came late and via the trey. Philoxy keyed a quick flurry with junior Madison Lowery also connecting from downtown, setting the stage for a 29-25 halftime lead for the Maroon and White.
Â
But SLU turned it on after the break and used a 63.6% clip in the third period to grab the lead and did not look back. An 8-0 run in the final 5:30 of the period swung momentum the way of the Billikens and turned the lead to the home side.
Â
For the day, UMass was held to just 26.2% from the field, despite winning the turnover margin. SLU had the edge in rebounding (46-42) and bench points (26-16).
Â
Massachusetts is scheduled to play next in a 5 p.m. game vs. Saint Joseph's on Fri., Jan. 29 at the Mullins Center.
