Senior forward named league's Player of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – For the second straight week, University of Massachusetts senior forward Sam Breen has been named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, the league announced Monday for the period ending Jan. 10.

Breen keyed the Minutewomen to a 2-1 week, averaging 16.3 points with two double-doubles. She opened the busy week with 11 points and as many rebounds in a tough loss to Rhode Island on Jan. 5. In a bounce-back win over Davidson on Jan. 8, Breen shot 9-of-16 for 19 points, eight boards and four steals.

The Gibsonia, Pennsylvania native was among several Minutewomen instrumental in a comeback victory over Fordham on Jan. 10. Seventeen of Breen's 19 points came in the second half rally effort, as Massachusetts snapped a 13-game losing streak vs. the Rams dating back to 2010. Breen added 10 boards in that win for her second double-double of the week and sixth of the season.

UMass now turns its focus to a Fri., Jan. 15 game at VCU, before heading across town to Richmond on Sun., Jan. 17. It is shaping up to be a highly-anticipated weekend as the squad will meet two of the top four teams in the Atlantic 10 standings, with UMass currently third in the league.
