THE OPENING TIP: THE MASSACHUSETTS-LA SALLE PREVIEW

• It's been 21 days since the UMass women's basketball team was in action–with the holiday break in the rear view, the squad continues Atlantic 10 play and rings in 2021 at La Salle on Sun., Jan. 3. Corey Cohen (PxP) and Maren Walseth (color) will call the game on ESPN+.

• UMass was also scheduled to begin this road trip at Saint Joseph's on New Year's Day. However, that game was postponed due to a COVID-19 related pause at St. Joe's. Along with that announcement, the Minutewomen added a Tues., Jan. 5 home game vs. Rhode Island.

• The La Salle game begins a stretch of four games in eight days, though the final three are within the home confines of the Mullins Center. Following the URI game, UMass also hosts conference foes Davidson (Jan. 8) and Fordham (Jan. 10).

• A win on Sunday would be the 600th all-time in Massachusetts program history. It would also be the fifth triumph in a row and mark the second such streak under head coach Tory Verdi. Previously, the Minutewomen nabbed a program-record 11 straight from Nov. 29, 2019-Jan. 15, 2020.

• In what seems like a lifetime ago, UMass last played on Dec. 13, taking an epic 63-61 win over St. John's at the buzzer. It was a layup by Sam Breen off a missed free throw that lifted the squad at the final horn, with the sequence ending up the No. 5 play of the day on ESPN's SportsCenter.

• The week following the St. John's game included news welcomed across college basketball–a blanket eligibility waiver awarded by the NCAA Division I Council to transfer student-athletes. As a result of the announcement, junior Danielle Sanderlin may play immediately. Under normal conditions, the New Jersey native would have been required to sit out 2020-21 after arriving at UMass from Canisius during Summer 2019.

• UMass has won the last three meetings with La Salle, including a 76-62 decision in Amherst last season. It marked the final victory in a program-record 11-game winning streak and also gave the Minutewomen their first 4-0 start in league play since 1996-97.
