All-Time vs. the SEC
Massachusetts faces off against Georgia for the first time in program history this weekend. It has been a while since the Minutemen have played a team from the SEC, as the last contest came against Tennessee in 2013 in a single neutral-site game. UMass was neck-and-neck with the Vols that day, but a two-run fifth was the difference as the Minutemen fell, 6-4, in Cary, North Carolina.
Recap in a Minute
The Minutemen were last in action on Sun., March 1, capping a weekend at Navy with a 7/9 doubleheader. Senior Nolan Kessinger clubbed his first home run of the season while three other Minutemen recorded hits in game one, but the squad fell by a 4-2 score. In the mid-afternoon finale, UMass belted out 13 hits and had three Minutemen record three apiece, which matched career highs for Anthony Videtto (3-for-5), Michael Rounds (3-for-5), and Ryan Coleman (3-for-5). The Minutemen scored in three of the final five innings, but it was not enough to counter a fast start by Navy in the early innings in a 17-5 setback.
Made at the Flagship
UMass alumnus and right-handed pitcher Justin Lasko was drafted by the New York Mets in the 30th round of the 2019 MLB First-Year Draft. He became the 57th Minuteman to be drafted all-time and made 10 appearances with the Brooklyn Cyclones in the New York-Penn League. Posting a 1.42 ERA over 12.2 innings, he was later assigned to Class A Columbia in July where Lasko made 11 appearances, one start and went 4-4 with a 2.57 clip.
The Stratford, Connecticut native was a three-year ace with the Minutemen and graduated in possession of multiple program records, including career starts (48), innings pitched (311.1) and strikeouts (247).
On Deck
The Minutemen head to Spartanburg, South Carolina next weekend, beginning Spring Break with a three-game set against the Wofford Terriers. The series opener takes place on Fri., March 13 at 6 p.m.
