Minutemen Fall at No. 4 Georgia, 5-0

Massachusetts remained scoreless with Bulldogs through seven innings
ATHENS, Ga. – University of Massachusetts baseball hung with the No. 4 nationally-ranked team for seven innings, but a five-run eighth by Georgia broke a scoreless tie as the Bulldogs defeated UMass, 5-0, on Friday night at Foley Field.
Junior Sean Harney (1-2) lasted seven-plus innings despite the tough loss, during which Harney struck out seven and allowed six hits and two walks. He was responsible for two runs, only one earned.
Arguably UMass' best opportunity to strike first came in the top of the eighth inning, when the squad loaded the bases. Freshman Jordan Erbe led off with a single to center field and moved up when redshirt sophomore Kane Medina contributed a pinch hit single. Erbe and Medina moved into scoring position on a fielder's choice and senior Nolan Kessinger was hit by a pitch, but Bulldogs starter Emerson Hancock battled back to strike out redshirt junior Anthony Videtto and end the threat.
Georgia would go on to bat around in its half of the eighth, beginning when Ben Anderson popped a leadoff single, moved to second on a wild pitch then scored on a throwing error. RBI singles by Connor Tate, Patrick Sullivan and a two-run base hit off the bat of Mason Meadows would push the Bulldogs' lead to five.
Hancock received a no-decision, turning in 7.1 shutout innings with 12 strikeouts, no walks and just three hits allowed. Ryan Webb was credited the win in relief of Hancock.
The Minutemen return to action on Sat., March 7 and face Georgia in the middle game of the teams' three-game set. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at Foley Field.
